Pediatrics Residency: How to Apply

All applicants, both U.S. medical graduates and international medical graduates (IMGs), are required to apply through .

U.S. medical graduates may obtain their ERAS application materials through the Student Affairs or Dean’s Office at their respective medical schools. International medical graduates can access their ERAS materials through .

While we welcome signals, they are not required. Additionally, signals are not used as part of our ranking process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are the most frequently asked questions about applying to the Pediatrics Residency Program at the University of Toledo:

When is the deadline to submit my application?
Applicants are encouraged to submit their materials as early as possible once ERAS opens for submissions and preferably before programs begin accessing applications for review. Our program conducts a comprehensive, holistic evaluation of all applications, and interview invitations are typically extended to selected candidates in mid‑October.

What months do you interview?
The Department of Pediatrics conducts interviews from the end of October through January.

When are virtual socials held?
Virtual socials are on specific interview Tuesdays and take place from 12:30 pm to 1:00 pm. These sessions occur between the morning and afternoon interview sessions and are hosted exclusively by the residents. Program administration does not attend.

We also offer a Second Look in mid‑February. This resident‑led evening event is open to all applicants who interviewed with us and would like another opportunity to get to know the program.

What residency programs does your department sponsor?
The Department of Pediatrics sponsors a three-year Pediatric (Categorical) Residency program.

Can international medical graduates apply to the program?
Yes, the residency program welcomes applications from international medical graduates (IMGs). All IMGs must be ECFMG certified prior to the NRMP ranking deadline.Ìý

The following criteria are preferred when reviewing IMG applications:

  • Passing score on USMLE Step I
  • Recommended score of 230 or higher on USMLE Step 2CK
  • Graduated from medical school within the last five years
  • Clinical experience in the United States within the last three years in an accredited residency program or medical school
  • The decision to invite any candidate for an interview depends on the total number of applications as well as the overall quality of the applicant pool

What visas does your program sponsor?
The Department of Pediatrics will only sponsor candidates who obtain a J-1 visa. We DO NOT sponsor H-1B visas for residents. Candidates who already hold permanent resident status are eligible to apply to the program.
